Obituary of Helen Gustas Poremba

Mrs. Helen Gustas Poremba, 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening at the Loretto Utica Center in Utica, New York. A lifelong resident of Amsterdam she was born on February 10, 1924. She attended local schools and was employed as a Nurse's Aide for Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church and was a member of several organizations within the church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, the Seniors, The Ladies of Charity, and the Living Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. On November 20, 1955 she was united in marriage to Edward J. Poremba. That union lasted 46 years until his passing on July 26, 2002. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Moros and her brother, Rev. Bernard Gustas. Her loving family includes her son, Thomas Poremba and his wife Geraldine; one granddaughter, Rebecca Hutchinson and her husband Jamie; and a special friend, William Hall all of Amsterdam, NY; a sister, Sadye Petraitis of Menands, NY and several nieces and nephews. A prayer service will be conducted on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 8:30a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30a.m. at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, 206 East Main Street, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz as celebrant. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Calling hours will be held this evening Friday from 4 until 7 at the funeral home. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary will gather at 6:00 p.m. at the home for services, where a Legacy Candle Ceremony will also take place at 6:45 p.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the church.
