Obituary of Grace B. Hand

Grace Hay Hand, 89, of the town of Glen, NY, passed away Tuesday November 13, 2007 at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam. She was born on June 18, 1918 in Amsterdam, NY to George A. Hay and Ethel E. Yates. She was a 1936 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and a 1937 graduate of the former Amsterdam School of Commerce. She worked as payroll clerk at the former Chalmers Button Company and the offices of Mohawk Carpet Mills both in Amsterdam. She also was a cashier for many years at the family business the former Hand?s Restaurant on Riverside Drive in Fultonville, NY. She married Thursdon Hand on May 25, 1941. In addition to her husband survivor?s include their three children, Darlene Douglas and her husband George of Ft. Hunter, NY, Leellyn Selden and her husband Gary of Alamogordo, N.M. and Wayne Hand and his wife ChristineDumar of Big Flats, N.Y. Nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. One sister, Miriam St. George and her husband Paul of Fairhaven, V.T. A sister-in-law, Margaret Hay of Delmar, NY. Many nieces and nephews also survive her. Grace was pre-deceased by her brother Earl Hay. Grace was very active in the community as a 4-H leader of the Lively Glenites in the 1950?s, the Deborah Glen Study Club and the Prisma Class. She was a member of the Glen Reformed Church. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 50 years ago and has been an inspiration to the rest of her family. Each one of her grandchildren learned how to maneuver the wheel chair and thought it to be great fun. Grace and Thursdon traveled the country in their motor home to spend the winters in a warmer climate with their daughter?s family from the early 70?s to the mid 80?s enjoying the grandchildren. Grace would always remember everyone through cards for special occasions she never forgot. Funeral Services will be held on Friday November 16, 2007 at 1:00P.M. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville, NY with the Rev. Stacey Midge presiding. Interment will be in Maple Ave Cemetery, Fultonville, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday November 15, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glen Reformed Church, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, 421 New Karner Rd., Suite 6, Albany, NY 12205 or to a charity of one?s choice.
