Obituary of Loren A. Stewart

Mr. Loren A. Stewart, 78 of Gloversville, died unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, November 10, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Emergency Room with his family at his side. He was born September 26, 1929 in Gloversville, the son of the late Russell and Grace Bandlow Stewart. He was a 1948 graduate of Gloversville High School and was a pitcher on the school?s baseball team. Professional Baseball scouts observed his talent, and following graduation Loren was sent to pitch for the St. Louis Browns in the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League where he pitched to Mickey Mantle. He also pitched in the Canadian-Amercan League where he holds a record for pitching the most games in a single season. Former baseball manager Jack McKeon was one of his catchers at that time. Loren and Mantle were drafted into the Army at the same time during the Korean War. Mantle failed the Army physical exam and stayed in baseball while Loren served in the Army and never returned to baseball. Loren was employed by the former G. Levor and Company and also for many years by Wood & Hyde Leather Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church and was inducted into the Fulton County Bowler?s Hall of Fame in 2005. He was very proud of bowling a perfect 300 game in 1980, and for many years bowled in several leagues including the Sunset, Adirondack, Friday Nite Men?s and Fulton County Classic Leagues. He loved his family dearly, and was an avid New York Yankees Baseball fan. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline L. Newkirk Stewart, whom he married on February 9, 1952 at the former St. Mary?s Church; five children, Mary E. Orloff Christopher, Deborah A. Semione Gregory, John J. Stewart Sari, Theresa R. Stewart and Joseph M. Stewart Deborah, all of Gloversville; a brother, Robert R. Stewart Julia of West Monroe; an uncle, Ralph A. Stewart of Amsterdam; 13 grandchildren, Daniel Dmyszewicz, Sarah Orloff, Patrick and Lauren Semione, Brandon, Brittany, Bradley, Brian and Brody Stewart, Roberto Vega, Anthony Zarrelli and Joshua and Jordan Stewart; 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 pm Monday, November 12th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted 9:15 am Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
