Obituary of Jack L. Bethel

Jack L. Bethel, 79, of Tomahawk Pl., Johnstown, NY passed away Tuesday June 12, 2007 at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY following a brief illness. Born in Columbus Ohio on December 28, 1927 the son of Leslie and Sarah Roberts Bethel. He attended Ohio schools and was a graduate of South High School in Columbus. He later went on to attend Ohio State University. Mr. Bethel was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. In 1955 he began work as the General Manager of Royce Aluminum in Taunton, MA. He then moved to the Fonda, NY and Johnstown, NY area in 1971. He became the General Manager and Vice President of Keymark in Fonda before retiring in 1989. He moved to Cape Cod following his retirement and returned to this area in 1991 where he has resided since. Jack spent the winters since his retirement in Sarasota, Florida. He was an avid golfer. Mr. Bethel attended the Fonda Reformed Church in Fonda, NY. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Johnstown Moose Lodge, the Antler?s Country Club now Rolling Hills in Ft. Johnson, NY and the Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Florida. He was also a member of the Johnstown, NY YMCA and was very active in the Salvation Army Charities. He was first married to Phyllis Lehner Bethel in January of 1949. She passed away in June of 1990. He then married Eunice D. Dillenbeck Bethel on September 1, 1991. In addition to his wife Eunice survivor?s include, one son, Mark L. Bethel of Denver, CO, one daughter, Melanie Russell of Foxboro, MA. One brother, Richard Bethel of Sarasota, Florida. Two grandchildren, Alex Bethel and Jack Bethel of Carbondale, CO. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Memorial services will be held on Saturday June 16, 2007 at 11:00A.M. at the Fonda Reformed Church, 21 Broadway, Fonda, NY with the Rev. Christopher DeGraaf presiding. Full military honors will take place at the church on Saturday. Interment of cremated remains will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, Fonda, NY. There will be no calling hours. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Johnstown Public Library, 38 South Market St., Johnstown, NY 12095. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville, NY 12072.
