Obituary of Alphonse DeSisto

Alphonse DeSisto, 94, formerly of Pulaski St., Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday morning May 8, 2007 at the Mt. Loretto Nursing Home where he has resided since 1996. Born in Alife, Province of Caserta, Italy on August 1, 1912, he was the son of Raffaele and Giovanna DiCaprio. Alphonse moved to the Amsterdam N.Y. area in 1914. He attended Amsterdam Schools and lived most of his life in the area. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Sangamon as a Radio Technician. He also served in the Pacific Theatre. He received a Presidential Unit Citation for his war service. Alphonse was the co-owner of Al?s Pizzeria in Gloversville, NY from 1950 until his retirement in 1985. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. He married Mary Ilnicki DeSisto on September 8, 1957, she predeceased him on January 1, 2002. Alphonse is survived by one daughter, Alice Hoal of Collierville, TN, and two grandchildren, Christopher Hoal and Valerie Hoal. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Besides his parents and his wife, Alphonse was predeceased by three brothers, Martin DeSisto of Gloversville, NY, Joseph DeSisto of Johnstown, and Cedric DeSisto of Slidell, LA, and one sister, Anna DeSisto of Amsterdam. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010 with the Rev. Lawrence Decker officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends from 11:00 to 12:00 on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Loretto Nursing Home, Swart Hill Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.
