Obituary of Bertha A. Coons

Bertha A. Coons, 74, of Kane Road, Fonda, passed away early Friday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility after a long illness. Born on July 7, 1932 in Amsterdam she was the daughter of the late James and Laura Royce Barker. She was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Fonda High School, Class of 49. Bertha was employed by Montgomery County Social Services as a foster parent for over 25 years. She helped over 90 children, through her years with the agency. She was also employed as a glove cutter for Templeton in her early years. A women devoted to her children, she was a 4-H leader, homemaker, and her home was a center for children to play and to be cared for. She was a member of the Fonda Reformed Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Bertha was also a member of the Glen- Mohawk Seniors. She was predeceased by a brother Richard Barker and a daughter, Sherry Freidlander. Survivors include her husband, John ?Jack? Coons, who she married on June 6, 1954; two daughters, Debbie Silvernail and her husband Timothy, and Anna Coons, all of Fonda; one son, Charles ?Charlie? Coons and his wife JoAnn of Milford, NY; 11 grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas, Justin, Seth, Sarah, Shawna, Tyler, Joel, Ayden, Casey, Drake; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 11a.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, with the Rev. Christopher J. DeGraaf presiding. Interment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sandflats, Fonda. Calling hours will be held on Monday evening from 4 until 7. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Fonda Reformed Church, Broadway, Fonda, NY 12068.
