Obituary of Evangelina Betancourt

Evangelina Betancourt, of Fairmont Avenue, Amsterdam, New York, passed away Saturday February 10, 2007 at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam, New York. Born in Manzanillo, Cuba she was the daughter of Felipe and Altagracia Fiquerdo Reitor. She attended local schools in Cuba and received her Salvation Army Officers Training there. She came to the United States from Cuba in 1962. She lived in Rochester, New York from 1962 to 1998. She along with her husband lived in Miami, Florida in 1999 before moving to Amsterdam, New York in 2000. Mrs. Betancourt was an ordained minister and officer of the Salvation Army in Cuba. She brought the first Spanish Salvation Army Church to the Northeast area in Rochester, New York in 1965. She worked for 20 years as a Bilingual Receptionist for the Monroe County, New York Department of Social Services retiring in 1991. She married Nicomedes ?Nico? Betancourt on October 18, 1953. In addition to her husband survivor?s include; One son, Daniel Betanocurt of Rochester, New York; two daughters, Evangelina Kidwai and her husband Sartaj of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Digna Betancourt Swingle and her husband Bruce of Bloomfield, New York. One brother; Pedro Reitor of Havana, Cuba and two sisters; Alicia Escobar of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Raquel Gonzalez of Orlando, Forida. Two grandchildren; Rachel Beth Swingle and Timothy Kidwai, Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 17, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, New York, with Captain Ramos of the Salvation Army Church in Amsterdam presiding. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday February 16, 2007 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Church of Amsterdam.
