Obituary of Donald P. Schmidtmann

Donald P. Schmidtmann, Sr., 72, of Pioneer Street, passed away Sunday at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam. Born February 19, 1934 in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Erich and Ruth Ott Schmidtmann. He was a life long resident and attended local schools. Donald was first employed by Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and later he worked as a custodian for the Greater Amsterdam School District for ten years until retiring in 1996. He was a member of the C.S.E.A. Local Union in Amsterdam. Donald loved his family and friends. He especially enjoyed watching birds and squirrels in his yard, and going to garage sales. He was an avid Yankee fan. On April 9, 1953, he married the former Jeannie M. Corsette. Besides his wife he is survived by seven sons, Donald P. Schmidtmann, Jr. Julie of Tribes Hill, NY, David L. Schmidtmann Cathy of Amsterdam, Michael R. Schmidtmann Maureen of the Town of Perth, NY, Timothy R. Schmidtmann Maria of Johnstown, NY, Thomas R. Schmidtmann Marcia of Amsterdam, Jeffrey D. Schmidtmann Michele of Tribes Hill and William K. Schmidtmann of Perth; a sister, Pauline VanDyke of Gloversville, NY, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Donald was predeceased by a son, Chris W. Schmidtmann, who died in 1975; daughter-in-law Michele Schmidtmann who died in 1998 and two brothers, Erich and Paul Schmidtmann. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, where the Office of the Burial of the Dead will be read by the Rev. Christopher Smith, Rector of St. Ann?s Episcopal Church. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Donald?s memory to his family.
