Obituary of Salvatore Sam Guarnier

Mr. Salvatore ?Sam? Guarnier, 90 of Gloversville, died suddenly on Friday November 3, 2006. Born March 23, 1916 in Gloversville, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Cecilia Nicosia Guarnier. Mr. Guarnier was educated in Gloversville schools and employed at various area leather companies including G. Levors and Liberty Dressing Co., where he retired in 1981. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sports, especially the Yankees. A life member of the YMCA, he was a well-known handball player and active until just a few years ago. Sam was also a very strong family role model and took great pride in his wife and children. He was also active in Labor Union affairs and the Knights of Columbus Council # 265 where he served as secretary and Grand Knight. As a member of Mt. Carmel Church, he often assisted with the collections and also for offertory. He is survived by his wife; Margaret Peters Guarnier of Gloversville, whom he married September 7, 1941, his children: Kathyleen Guarnier of Schenectady, Cecelia Andrew Malagisi of Gloversville, Salvatore Cynthia Guarnieri of Laurel Maryland, Maria Hallenbeck and her fiancé Charles Vande Voorde of Gloversville, and Rita Guarnieri of Guilderland. He is also survived by a sister, Madalene Joseph Salamack of Johnstown, and eight grandchildren: Ann Mark Dejnozka of Saratoga Springs, Gina Daniel Mc Allister of Syracuse, Krista Peter Denecke of Rochester, Salvatore A. Guarnieri III and Giovanna Guarnieri both of Laurel Maryland, Christopher Hallenbeck, Michael Hallenbeck and his fiancée Diana Pierce and Kolin Hallenbeck all of Gloversville. Additional survivors include three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A prayer service will be held 9:15 Tuesday from the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, and at 10 am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville. The family will receive friends Monday 3-7 pm at the funeral home. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council # 265 will meet 6 pm Monday at the funeral home for their ritual service. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
