Obituary of Maybelle Stewart Schere

Maybelle Stewart Schere, 93, of Guy Park Avenue, passed away Friday afternoon at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility. Born in Newark, New Jersey on May 7, 1913, to William and Elizabeth Cott Matthews, she resided in Glen Cove, Long Island until her marriage in 1937 to Amsterdam Attorney William J. Stewart who died in 1982. In 1990 she married Monroe Schere, a writer, who died in 1996. A graduate of SUNY Albany, she taught English, History and Drama for several years prior to marriage. Mrs. Schere was active in community and church affairs for many years. Among her activities in Amsterdam, Mrs. Schere was president of the Century Club General Federation of Women?s Club from 1974 to 1975. She was a member of the original charter committee to establish the present Amsterdam Senior Citizen?s Organization in 1969. As a ruling elder of the United Presbyterian Church, she served as the first woman Moderator of the Albany Presbytery from 1971 to 1972, as director of Women?s Concerns in the Synod of the Northeast in Syracuse, New York, and was the Vice Moderator of the National Committee for the Self Development of People from 1973 to 1974. Survivors include Douglas W. Stewart of Quincy, Massachusetts, Margaret S. Walker of Atlanta, Georgia, and Thomas A. Stewart of Brooklyn, New York. She is also survived by six grandchildren, two stepsons, four step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, Duncan J. Stewart predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Amsterdam, on Saturday, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. led by the Rev. Roland MacDonald, the church pastor and the Rev. Hugh V. Stewart, a nephew of the deceased. A reception for family and friends will take place at the church following the service. Contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of the of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue.
