Obituary of Virginia Doak

Virginia Lockhart Doak, 92, of Locust Ave., Amsterdam, passed away Friday October 6, 2006 at her home. Born in Amsterdam, NY on April 30, 1914. She was the daughter of James and Martha Lindsay Lockhart. In 1940 she married Edmund S. Doak who died in 1983. Virginia was a graduate of Amsterdam schools. She later was a graduate of SUNY at Cobleskill, NY and later SUNY at Oneonta, NY. She taught in the former Montgomery County schools Cadaughrity and Hammondtown and was a Kindergarten teacher at Thomas Corners, Scotia-Glenville and the former McCleary School in Amsterdam. She was the coordinator of the New York State Experimental Pre-Kindergarten program locally known as ?Early Start? for seven years before retiring in 1972. Mrs. Doak was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Amsterdam Retired Teachers Association, former member of the New York State Association for the Education of Young Children Capital District Chapter, a member and past president of the Amsterdam Chapter of Oneonta Alumni. She was also a member of the A.A.R.P., the W.O.W., Perth and Hagaman Seniors and the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Virginia was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the former Art Wel Chapter #208 Order of the Eastern Star, now the Amsterdam & Canajoharie Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a life member and Past Royal Matron of St. Monica Court #61 Order of the Amaranth. She was the District Deputy of the 9th District, Grand Fraternal Correspondence of the Grand Court and Grand Representative to New Mexico of the Order of the Amaranth State of New York. She was a member of the Shepherd Shrine, Order of the White Shrine in Schenectady. Her survivors include her daughter, Virginia Lynn Costisick of East Greenbush, NY; three granddaughters, Virginia Lynn Morse, Melissa Sue Johnson and her husband Marc Johnson, and Haley Beth Costisick and her companion Chris Unwin and two great grandsons, Tyler and Heiden. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday October 11, 2006 at 11:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with the Rev. Greg DeSalvatore presiding. Interment is in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday October 10, 2006 form 5:00-7:00P.M. at the funeral home.
