Obituary of Joseph M. Madej

Mr. Joseph M. Madej, 91 years old, of McQuade Road, died Saturday at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where he had been a patient for a short time. He was born May 21, 1915 in Amsterdam, a son of Andrew and Mary Fura Madej and was a life long resident of the Amsterdam area. Mr. Madej served with the US Army during WWII. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Madej had been employed at the Watervliet Arsenal as a machinist retiring in 1977. He received the Sustained Performance Award at the Arsenal for excellence in the work place. Mr. Madej was a communicant of St. Stephen?s Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman. He loved to fish and enjoyed sports in general. Mr. Madej married the former Mary Parillo, on November 1, 1958, who survives. Also surviving are his brother Steven A. Madej of Amsterdam, 4 grandchildren; Edward F. DiDonna, Robert J. DiDonna, Lawrence DiDonna and Cheryl A. Shapiro, 5 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Madej was predeceased by his stepson Edward L. DiDonna who passed away on December 3, 2000. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:00am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, followed at 10:00am by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen?s Church in Hagaman. Burial will take place in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 5 until 7:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Schrine of North American Martyrs, 136 Shrine Road, Auriesville, NY 12016.
