Obituary of Beatrice J. Allen Hughes

Beatrice J. Allen Hughes, 91, former resident of Romeyn Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Tuesday, August 15, at The Heritage in Findlay, Ohio. Born on January 6, 1915 in Amsterdam, New York, she was the daughter of the late Harvey D. and Winifred Bowers Allen. She lived most of her life in the Amsterdam area and graduated in 1931 from the Amsterdam High School and in 1932 from the Gloversville Business School. Beatrice was employed as a bookkeeper for the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills in Amsterdam. She was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church and the Pioneer Class of the church, a former member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a past president and former member of the Board of Managers of the Sanford Home. Beatrice enjoyed sewing, crocheting, flower gardening and loved to sing. Beatrice was first married to Everet Steele in 1935; he died in 1943. In 1945 she married Earl Hughes, who died in 1975. Survivors include her family, a son Earl R. ?Skip? Hughes and his wife Joyce of Pawling, NY; a daughter, Mary Alice Patrickson and her husband David of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Jane Allen Lindsay of Winter Park, Florida; nieces Barbara Cordaro and Jane Hasher; nephews, Harvey ?Gene? Allen, Robert, Glen and Ken Lindsay and Robert Geesler; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Emily and Dylan; several great nieces and great nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her brother Harvey B. Allen. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12:00 noon at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in Maple Avenue in Fultonville, NY. A calling hour will be held one hour prior to the funeral from 11 to 12:00 noon. Memorial contributions may be made in Beatrice?s memory to the Hospice of Amsterdam or to the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam.
