Obituary of William J. Potkovic

William ?Bill? J. Potkovic, 61 years old of Bruce Road, died Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness. Bill was born December 13, 1944 in N.Y.C., a son of Julius and Florence Watson Potkovic and was a life long resident of the Amsterdam area. He served with the US Army in Korea, during the Viet Nam era, as a chef and as a barber. He worked for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady and he owned and operated a Texaco Service Station in Schenectady. Bill had been employed by Bonded Insulation in Hagaman for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Polish American Veteran?s Club in Amsterdam. Bill enjoyed a variety of activities: Motorcycle riding, hunting, fishing, cooking, eating out, and fixing anything anyone brought his way. He was a wonderful musician playing many instruments including the violin, mandolin, banjo, guitar and harmonica. He had a great love of classic country music. Bill was a loving husband, caring father and grand father as well as a wonderful man who cared deeply for all those around him. He did so much for the people he cared for. Bill will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lynette Ritchie Potkovic, his three daughters: BilliJo Dolton and her husband Sean of W. Galway; BobbiJo Potkovic and her companion Patrick Stearns of Amsterdam and Tammie Potkovic of Galway. Three brothers and one sister survive: Julius ?Jim? Potkovic of Orlando, Florida; Henry L. Smith of Washington, DC; Ed Smith of Maryland and Florence Bagdan of Amsterdam; and the spouses of the siblings. Five grand children: Craig Armer, Marcellus Luck, Jr., Schuyler and Zachary Dolton and Ethan Stearns. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A brief service of remembrance will be held 8:00pm Tuesday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Service, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6 until 8:pm at the funeral home prior to the service. Cremation will follow at Vale Crematoreum in Schenectady. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: American Cancer Society or Fabry, s Disease Foundation.
