Obituary of Leila H. Brown

Mrs. Leila H. Brown of Broadalbin passed away in Amsterdam on the 2nd of July. She was born in the Town of St. Johnsville on February 25th 1906 to Raymond and Ella Frye Hillabrandt of St. Johnsville. She was educated at East Creek Rural School, St. Johnsville High School and Oneonta Normal School. She also attended the State University College of Oneonta where she earned the Degree of Bachelor of Science, Major in Elementary Education. She taught the primary grades in the Amsterdam School System for eighteen and a half years and is well remembered by many former students. She married then Lieutenant, later Colonel, Hugh G. Brown of Broadalbin, at a wedding at her family?s home in St. Johnsville in 1935. She left the teaching profession in 1947 to accompany her husband to a succession of military assignments around the world, primarily in the US and Europe. The last key assignment was as the Military Attache of the US Legation in Budapest, Hungary, behind the ?Iron Curtain? during the Cold War in 1963-65. Colonel Brown passed away in 1976 and Mrs. Brown has resided at Locust Grove remaining active in community affairs such as the Republican Club of Fulton County and various social organizations. She also served on the Fulton County and various social organizations. She also served on the Board of the Union Mills Cemetery Association. She is survived by a son, Colonel Ret James P. Brown, daughter-in-law Youngsun, and a granddaughter, Sarah, all residing in Plantation Key Florida. Visiting hours are not planned. The remains will be interred at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
