Obituary of John Stewart

Mr. John Stewart, age 72, of Gloversville, died Friday evening, June 9, 2006 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Emergency Room after being stricken at his home. He was born January 20, 1934 in Johnstown, the son of the late Frank and Mattie Baker Stewart. A 1953 graduate of Johnstown High School, John served in the US Army in the Marshall Islands. He later worked for the Gloversville Enlarged School District for many years as building supervisor at the former Estee School and retired as head custodian at Kingsborough Elementary School. John was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church, where he served as a church council member and choir member, and was a former trustee. He was a board member of the Regional Animal Shelter. He sang in the chorus at the Gloversville Senior Citizens Service Center, and with the chorus at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home. He was also a member of CSEA Local #818. He was also an avid tennis player and loved animals. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Schoolcraft Stewart, whom he married on July 14, 1957; two children, Michael Stewart Suzanne of Mayfield and Sherri Ryan Timothy of Gloversville; three sisters, Dorothy Colby of Saranac Lake, Nina Curtis of Utica and Margaret Stewart of Johnstown; two grandchildren, Racquel Ryan and Colton Ryan, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Frank Stewart and Marguerite Willis. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 9:30 am Monday. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Main St. United Methodist Church, 316 N. Main St; Gloversville, NY 12078, or to the charity of your choice.
