Obituary of Alta M. Baird

Mrs. Alta M. Baird, 71, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at home. She was born October 14, 1934 in Gloversville, daughter of the late George D. and Marjorie Mannigan Elmendorf. Mrs. Baird was educated in Gloversville schools and was a graduate of Gloversville High School. She also attended Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing for a time. Most of her life was spent as a cook for the Gloversville Enlarged School District; she retired in 1986 as head cook at Boulevard School. A devoted family person, Alta had a variety of interests including camping, fishing, crafts of various types, and traveling, especially to Branson, Missouri and to Virginia to see her grandchildren. Alta is survived by her husband, Percy B. Baird Jr. of Gloversville whom she married March 27, 1955; a daughter, Sherrie Yeates and her husband Doug of Chesapeake, Virginia; a sister, Edith Nilsen of Johnstown; two brothers, Michael H. Elmendorf and his wife Judy of Meco and Patrick L. Elmendorf and his wife Melissa of Mayfield. She is also survived by her most special grandchildren: Nicole, Ryan and Christian Yeates, as well as sister-in-law, Carolyn Batchum of Mayfield; brother-in-law, Larry M. Baird of Syracuse; son?in-law, Robert G. Brooks of Bleecker and special niece, Michaelyn Elmendorf and her daughter Alta. Additional survivors include nieces, nephews, cousins and her best friend, Leah Wells and her daughter Heidi. Alta was pre-deceased by a daughter, Deborah Brooks. Private funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to Mt. Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave. Gloversville, N.Y. 12078. Arrangements are by the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville.
