Obituary of Ruth Frost Berkman

Mrs. Ruth Frost Berkman, 88 years old, former Amsterdam, New York resident, died Monday May 22, 2006 at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy. Mrs. Berkman was born March 25, 1918 in Hudson Falls, N.Y. a daughter of Morris and Celia Swyer Frost. She was a graduate of the former NYS College For Teachers in 1938 and had taught at Ft. Edward High School, The Ardsley School and the Amsterdam School District. Mrs. Berkman worked for General Electric Co. in Schenectady during World War II. She was a member of Temple of Israel and of Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue, both in Amsterdam. Ruth married Dr. Harry A. Berkman May 19, 1946. He died August 5, 2003. She is survived by 3 daughters: Karen Zaur and her husband Alan of Montpelier, Vermont, Marilyn Sturman and her husband Skip of Thetford, Vermont and Debbie Jakaitis and her husband Gary of Slingerlands, NY, 3 sisters: Marian Sussna of NYC, Bertha Reed of California and Hannah Karp of Massachusetts, 6 grandchildren; Isaac Zaur, Nathaniel Zaur and his wife Rebecca, Jed and Cara Sturman and Leah and Daniel Jakaitis, and 1 great grand daughter Jean Marie Zaur. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Mrs. Berkman was predeceased by her brother Alfred Frost. Funeral services will held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday May 24, 2006 at Temple of Israel Cemetery, Cranesville, NY, with Rabbi Morris Zimbalist officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Debbie and Gary Jakaitis, 14 Oneida Court, Slingerlands, NY, immediately following the funeral service. Arrangements are under the direction of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
