Obituary of Edmund Magila

Edmund Magila, 90, of Mathias Avenue, passed away peacefully Thursday at his home. Born in Amsterdam on August 13, 1915, he was the last surviving child of Mykolas and Ona Magila. Educated locally, he entered the US Army in 1942 and served throughout the war. Ed was involved in the Omaha Beach Invasion where he was wounded. For that, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Amsterdam. Ed had a long career as a letter carrier with the US Post Office in Amsterdam until he retired. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church, and was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans. He and his wife were active members of the Inman Seniors, and were charter members of the Inman Chorus. On Feb. 15, 1953 he was united in marriage to the former Helen Yurkon. That union lasted for fifty-two years until her recent passing on October 17th of this year. His brothers, Louis and Leonard, also predeceased him. His loving family includes his brother in law Richard Yurkon of Latham, a sister in law, Catherine Magila of Schenectady; niece, Catherine Yurkon of Poughkeepsie; nephews, Robert Ellen Yurkon and Thomas Katie Yurkon all of Oswego, Matthew Justin Yurkon of Coral Gables, Florida and Timothy Magila of Schenectady; grandnieces and grandnephews also survive. Services are Monday morning at 8:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 am at St. Casimir?s Church, Fr. Stanley J. Swierzowski, celebrant. Interment is in St. Casimir?s Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are Sunday from 2-4 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to St. Casimir?s Church Memorial Fund, St. Casimir?s Cemetery Fund, or the Inman Senior Center, all in care of the funeral home.
