Obituary of Edmund Anton Hecklau

Edmund Anton Hecklau of Greenwich, Connecticut passed away November 25 at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence after a brief illness. He was 100 years old. Born in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 16, 1905, the fourth of eight children born to Otto and Julia Hecklau, he attended public schools in Irvington, New Jersey. He became a journeyman electrician through apprenticeship, and worked in the building trade until 1929. From 1932 until retiring in 1969 he was employed by the IBM Corporation in Endicott, New York. During World War II, he helped develop a trainer for the instruction of military personnel in use of the Norden bombsight. He moved to Greenwich in 1973 where he was a resident of Cos Cob until 1995, moving to Hill House in Riverside. An avid reader and life long collector of rare books and first editions, he was for several years an active volunteer at the Bush Holley House where he catalogued the Greenwich Historical Society?s collection of rare and out of print books. His other major interest was the retired men?s Club of Greenwich, of which he was an active member for twenty-two years. He was also a member of St. John?s Lutheran Church. His beloved wife, Helene Kreisel Hecklau of Amsterdam, predeceased him in 1971. They had been married for forty-four years. Surviving are his son and daughter in law, Dr. & Mrs. Edmund F. Hecklau of Stamford, Connecticut; granddaughters, Susan Losco of Park Ridge New Jersey, and Constance Keyserling of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandson, John Hecklau of Clinton, New Jersey and six great grandchildren. Memorial services will take place on December 17th at 11:00 am at St. John?s Lutheran Church, Stamford. Graveside services will take place in the spring in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam.
