Obituary of Carl A. Nordby

Mr. Carl A. Nordby, 78, formerly of Borden Road, Fultonville, passed away Tuesday morning at Montgomery Meadows. Born May 16, 1927 in the Bronx, NY he was the son of the late Carl Anton Nordby and Elizabeth Marie Starin. He was educated in New York City schools and attended Xavier High School. Mr. Nordby joined the United States Navy in 1945 and then attended St. Peter?s College in New Jersey for a time before going to work for the NY Telephone Company. In 1960 he moved to Fultonville; he retired from the telephone company in 1991 after 44 years of service. Mr. Nordby enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing and hunting. He loved sports and enjoyed coaching his son?s baseball teams in Amsterdam and Fonda. Carl was an avid fan of baseball and rooted for the Boston Celtics and Notre Dame. Mr. Nordby was a communicant of St. Cecilia?s Roman Catholic Church, in Fonda. He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Calhoun who passed away in 1971. Mr. Nordby was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Taylor Nordby and a grandson, Christopher Ripley. His loving family includes his wife, the former Mary M. Jennings, whom he married in the fall of 1975; three daughters, Mary Jane Ripley and her husband Donald of Amsterdam, NY, Joan Czarra and her husband Jonathan of Centreville, VA, Patricia Rittenhouse and her husband Timothy of Indiana; four sons, Andrew Nordby and his wife Arlene of Colorado Springs, CO, Edward Nordby and his wife Diane of Amsterdam, NY, Thomas Nordby of VA, James Nordby and his Fiancé Kathleen Davey of Tribes Hill, NY; one step son Shaun Coddington and his wife Julie of Amsterdam, NY; one sister Mary Schroeder of Maryland; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 9:15a.m. at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia?s Roman Catholic Church at 10:00a.m., Rev. Patrick Gallagher OFM Conv. as celebrant. Internment will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery with full military honors. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7 Thursday at the funeral home.
