Obituary of Raymond S. Martuscello

Raymond S. Martuscello, 82, of Florida Avenue, died Monday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam. He was a patient of the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility for the past 6 years. Born September 8, 1923, in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph and Michelina Ditore Martuscello. Ray was a life long Amsterdam resident and graduated in 1941 from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific Theatre and was in the battles of; Eastern Mandates, Ryukyus and the Southern Philippines. After the war he attended Hudson Valley Community College. Ray was employed as a fireman for the Scotia Navy Depot in Scotia for 30 years, retiring in 1973. After his retirement he worked part time for the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course for 14 years. He was a member of the; South Side Veteran?s; South Side Golf Club; Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course; was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church; and at one time played semi- professional baseball and football. Ray enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a man of simple taste, was humble, and had a great sense of humor. He was proud of his Italian cooking and loved making his own wine. He loved animals. On October 27, 1946, he married the former Ruth Katherine Betz. Besides his wife he is survived by; a son, Stephen M. Martuscello of Latham, N.Y.; a daughter, Diane R. Martone and her husband Danny of Amsterdam; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Ray was predeceased by his; brothers, Frank Martuscello, William Martuscello, Daniel Martuscello, Judge M. Henry Martuscello from Brooklyn, Gerald Martuscello, Louis Martuscello and James B. Martuscello; a sister, Concetta Cherbino. Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Lawrence Decker officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers are acceptable, however, those desiring to may make a memorial contribution in Ray?s memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Memorial Fund, P.O.
