Obituary of Charles Garfield Zeitler

Mr. Charles Garfield Zeitler of Gloversville died Friday, August 5, 2005 at the emergency room of Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. He was 87 years of age. He was born September 23, 1917 in Gloversville, the son of the late Charles and Leah Hobbs Zeitler. A 1934 graduate of Gloversville High School, he was also a graduate of Albany College of Pharmacy in 1938. He served in the Army during World Warr II, and was the first volunteer military replacement from the Gloversville area. Following the war he became employed at the former Ahearns Pharmacy in Johnstown. He and his uncle Stanley Hobbs co-owned and operated the Hobbs & Zeitler Pharmacy in Gloversville for many years until it was sold in the 1970?s. For a number of years he then worked part-time at the Palmer Pharmacy in Johnstown, and finally retired as a pharmacist at the Fulton County Infirmary. Gar enjoyed snow skiing and playing golf. He was a member of the Foothills United Methodist Church, Pine Brook Golf Club, The Eccentric Club, Johnstown Moose Lodge, the White House Hunting Club in Wells, a charter member of the Gloversville Rotary Club, and was a former member of the Gloversville Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Gretchen J. McDonald Zeitler, also two children, Gail M. Zeitler of the town of Steuben, NY and Gregory Harris Zeitler of Beaver Creek, OH; four grandchildren, John Garfield Easterly, Todd Ryan Zeitler, Tim Daniel Zeitler and Teresa Marie Zeitler ; three nephews, Richard Zeitler, Garfield Zeitler and James Zeitler; three cousins, Linda Hill DelSavio, Stanley Hobbs and Eleanore Hobbs. His brother Richard Zeitler preceded him in death. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 12th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, with the Rev. Wayne E. Jones Sr. officiating. Private interment will take place at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Association for the Blind, 507 Kent St, Utica, NY 13501 or to the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, 847 Co. Hwy. 122, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the charity of your choice.
