Obituary of Larry R. Howland

Mr. Larry R. Howland, 65 of Gloversville, died Monday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. Born in Gloversville on December 21, 1939, he was the son of the late Reginald and Clymena Mae Kilgore Howland. A 1958 graduate of Gloversville High School, Larry was a well-known area athlete. He played both fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball for several years, and was especially known for his basketball ability. He played with many traveling teams throughout the capital district, including Schenectady and Albany. Many local games at both the YMCA and Gloversville Armory were memorable for many local fans. A naval veteran during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he served on helicopter carriers, the USS Boxer and the USS Okinawa. Larry was also a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church and the Gloversville American Legion Post. He was employed for many years at Nathan Littauer Hospital in the environmental service department. A loving and devoted family person, Larry most especially loved his adoring grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Linda Klock Howland, whom he married June 27, 1964, a daughter, Valerie Wilson and husband Burt of Caroga Lake, a son Tracy Howland of Perth, a brother, Bruce Howland and his wife Elizabeth of Mayfield, two grandchildren; Andrew and Adam Wilson, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. from the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Freemont Street, with Reverend Christopher Hamm, Pastor of North Main Street United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the American Red Cross.
